Tips To Keep Your Back Healthy

Caring for Your Spine At Home

Proper care for your spine at home includes actions performed during daily activities, as well as weekend projects. Your home can provide many scenarios where injury is preventable with proper lifting and turning techniques.

  • As you lift an object keep your back straight, use your legs to power the lift, not your back and shoulders.
  • When turning, don’t plant your feet and twist your upper body. The proper technique is to keep your feet moving, and the back straight, while turning in the direction you wish to go.
  • Many back injuries at home are caused by bending and twisting the spine improperly, so use your feet and legs to power and pivot your body.

Fitness & Chiropractic Care

Caring for Your Spine with Chiropractics

Golf, soccer, gardening, tennis, jogging, winter activities – many activities you do can sometimes result in injuries, sprains, strains, and spinal problems. Regular wellness care and spinal adjustments can improve your neuromuscular condition, which, in turn, improves flexibility and reduces chances of injuries and back pain due to sports and activities.

Chiropractic Care & the Workplace

Carpal Tunnel – Chiropractic joint manipulation and mobilization of the wrist and hand, stretching and strengthening exercises, soft-tissue mobilization techniques, and even yoga can be helpful. Scientists are also investigating other therapies, such as acupuncture, that may help prevent and treat this disorder.
Ask us about ergonomics and how to reduce your chances of neck and back strain due to improper head and neck positioning during computer use – for children and adults.

Exercise Tips for Back Pain – from the American Chiropractic Association (ACA)

The ACA Tips for Back Pain Prevention:
  • Maintain a healthy diet and weight. Remain active—under the supervision of your doctor of chiropractic. Avoid prolonged inactivity or bed rest.
  • Warm up or stretch before exercising or other physical activities, such as gardening.
  • Maintain proper posture.
  • Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes.
  • Sleep on a mattress of medium firmness to minimize any curve in your spine.
  • Lift with your knees, keep the object close to your body, and do not twist when lifting.
  • Quit smoking. Smoking impairs blood flow, resulting in oxygen and nutrient deprivation to spinal tissues.
  • Work with your doctor of chiropractic to ensure that your workstation is ergonomically correct
